This is a video still from an unmade video - it is just a dream I had.

A notion of fake?

2009. September 23. 06:25 | (3 comment)

If I look over the images we've been posting I see the notion of Fake as something akin to an injury or loss [of life or faculty].

There is this underlying current in the life of this family F4, which appears as a constant need to be mending or fixing something that is perceived to be broken - like a state of being, we are mending each others lives in little ways, an accumulation of small gestures - many of which are fake - in that they are instantaneous and not intended to really mend but rather to sooth or act as a salve.

The injuries that occur are also often fake - they are perceived wrongs or slights, they are bids for sympathy, they are manifestations of the psychological state of being a family.

There is a constant mending and breaking as if somehow we are knitting ourselves together  - less and less separate but always strange and oddly disparate.

the correction

The Correction is a new work from one project within our collaborative milieu, which specifically explores power and vulnerability across gender and generation, within the family. A slippage in the normal allocation of authority and/or innocence is alluded to in a deliberate exploitation of the conventions of portraiture.

Fake

I remember Sue said to me, maybe about 20 years ago!...'will the real Marcus Williams stand up'...we were on a beautiful beach called Muriwai near Gisbourne in New Zealand.

The theme 'Fake' makes me think of this moment, she was trying to get to the 'real me'. We play so many roles and mostly we hold back what we really think and feel. Or we are just preoccupied and not in the moment.

There are only rare moments where the line is open. When one of the children gives me an open line, I have to grab it then, not later when it suits me. They will not be interested later. I miss the moment a lot. Other conversations are going on in my head, trivial problems, things I think are important at the time. I am faking it.

In this photo heading F4's Virtual Workroom we are wearing each others eyes and mouths etc. Trying to understand 'the real other'?
